History

JustWork emerged from the life and ministry of Grandview Calvary Baptist Church in the Grandview-Woodlands neighborhood of Vancouver, BC. Pastoral staff of the congregation encouraged the development of JustWork as a way to offer assistance and hope to those in the faith community and the neighborhood who were struggling to find work. JustWork officially began in February 2004 with a four-pronged strategy to assist those on the margins of our church and neighborhood--offering employment counseling, a job-match program, support for those with dreams of starting a small business, and social enterprise development for individuals facing major hurdles to the workforce.

Since the last half of 2005, JustWork has focused most of its time and energy on the development of social enterprises. We have sensed a particular call to assist those in our midst facing the most daunting challenges to finding work, and social enterprises seem to be the best tool available to us for this task.

A JUST STORY

Michael had finished up his studies at a seminary in Vancouver and was looking for the next opportunity.

JustWork had posted a position for a renovation business manager. Michael applied and during his interview suggested that a gardening and landscaping business might fit well with his skills and abilities. From there, JustGarden was born.
